FAQ
Rescue
Q: Do you pay the traffickers/masters to release trafficked children?
A: No funds are ever paid to traffickers to release children. We believe this would only serve to reward this criminal activity. Instead, we negotiate with the trafficker for the voluntary release of the enslaved child. If law enforcement officers accompany our rescue mission, they are able to extract the trafficked child without the trafficker's permission.
Q: If it is against the law to traffick children, why does child trafficking exist?
A: Like other crimes, child trafficking exists because enforcement of these laws is difficult due to lack of resources. In remote areas of Ghana, traffickers prey on impoverished parents by making false promises that persuade them to give up their child.
Reintegration
Q: What if you cannot locate the rescued child's parents?
A: If a rescued child is an orphan, or their parent(s) are not traceable, or they are unable to care for them, we try and place the child with relatives or a foster parent. If these options are not available, we continue to support the child in a shelter and enroll them in school, while working to find a permanent home for the child.
Q: What if you rescue an older child/teen where it is not practical to attend school?
A: We place the rescued teen/young adult in a vocational school/apprenticeship where they can learn a trade.
Donations
Q: Are my donations tax deductible?
A: Yes. If the donation is made in the United States to Right To Be Free. We accept donations in foreign currencies from other countries, but a tax deduction is not available to non-U.S. donors. Donations to Right To Be Free/Africa, an NGO in Ghana, follow their tax policies.
